The larval stage is regarded to be the main bottleneck of halibut production. Halibut eggs were obtained from captive broodstock both by stripping and by natural spawning. Artificial photoperiods were used to increase the total spawning season. Yolk sac larvae are presently produced either in small stagnant units or in large flow through systems. A major consideration is to avoid stress of the larvae, caused by mechanical disturbances of the larvae and by high bacterial load or high ammonia levels in the water. The experimentation showed that halibut larvae began to ingest algae earlier than rotifers <i>Brachionus</i> sp. Supplementation of algae to first feeding tanks resulted in enhanced survival and growth rate of the larvae. Both rotifers... |

Eight WEFTA laboratories participated in two series of intercomparison exercises on sulfite determination in tropical shrimps. Samples of tropical shrimps were spiked with sodium metabisulfite (Na2S2O5) and hydroxymethylsulfonate (HMS) at a level of 25-90 mg SO2/kg. Most of the laboratories determined the sulfite content with (modified) methods of Monier-Williams or De Vries et al. The overall mean recovery of sulfite was rather low (47-60%), which may be attributed to an irreversible reaction of sulfite with the tropical shrimps. The repeatability of the methods within the participating laboratories was good. However, reproducibility among the laboratories was... |

An overview of the wet deposition of micropollutants (trace metals -Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Hg, Zn- and organic compounds -PAHs, PCBs, pesticides) to the North Sea and adjacent areas is presented. The results of (in)direct measurements of the wet flux are compared to modeling results. Attention is given to specific problems like revolatilization, sea-spray, contamination, gas-to-particle ratios in wet deposition of Hg and the organic substances. Also, the importance of wet deposition is weighted to that of dry deposition and non-atmospheric input routes to the North Sea. It is concluded that -especially for organic micropollutants- current knowledge is insufficient to yield an accurate and detailed image of the impact and importance of wet deposition to the North... |

Results of automatic and continuous analysis of both physical and chemical parameters of sea water between Marbella (Malaga) and Brest (<i>Mechelen</i> cruise, Mediterranean 1968, supported by the « Institut royal des Sciences naturelles de Belgique ») are studied in this paper. Two conclusions are reached: 1° The distribution of salinity, temperature and nitrate, sometimes anomalous, appears to follow some rythm or law. 2° There appears a close spacial relationship too between these anomalies and fishery. Then, it is possible to use the continuous automatic method for the exploratory work on fishery technology. |

Among the environmental variables influencing the performance of fish larvae, the quantity and quality of food belong to the more important ones. Alterations of nutritional condition affect, apart from changing growth and survival, a number of structural and molecular parameters of the larvae. Particularly the absence of food has pronounced effects on histological features of, <i>e.g.</i> the liver and the intestine, on activities of digestive proteolytic enzymes, as well as on RNA/DNA ratios. The starvation-related changes are similar for the larvae of totally different fish species, <i>e.g. Clarias gariepinus</i>, a tropical freshwater species, the whitefish <i>Coregonus lavaretus</i>, from temperate freshwaters, or... |

<i>Paraustrorhynchus</i> gen. n., <i> P. pacificus</i> (California), <i>Antiboreorhynchus novzelae</i> sp. n. (New Zealand) and <i>Gyratrix proaviformis</i> sp. n. (Oregon) are described as new taxa. Additional notes are given on <i>Gyratrix hermaphroditus</i> Ehrbg. (new localities on the N. American Pacific coast), <i>Scanorhynchus forcipatus</i> Karling (new locality in California), <i>Paraustrorhynchus elixus</i> (Marcus) comb. n. and <i>Alcha evelinae</i> Marcus (new localities in California). The taxonomy of the genera and species is discussed. Viewpoints are presented on evolutionary trends and homologous atrial organs in the family Polycystididae. |

The ultrastructural organization of the proboscis in Mesorhynchus terminostylis is distinctly different from that in other members of the Polycystididae in which it is currently classified. The sheath epithelium is formed by three belts, all with intra-epithelial nuclei. The apical belt of the bipartite cone epithelium has a single intrabulbar nucleus, and the basal belt possesses five insunk nucleiferous cell parts behind the bulb. Six types of glands surface through the epithelia; the three types emerging through the cone epithelium can be homologized with those described for Polycistis naegelii. Only uniciliary receptors are found in the epithelium. The musculature in the bulb has a very loose appearance, and the bulbar septum appears to be a bipartite... |

The marine benthic red algae of Motupore Island and vicinity (Port Moresby area, Papua New Guinea [PNG]) are documented and 36 of the 161 species are illustrated. All records are listed with bibliographic, biogeographic, taxonomic and nomenclatural comments. Apart from several undescribed taxa, which we are in the process of describing separately, none is endemic to the island at this stage. The discovery of the east Australian species <i>Gracilaria rhodymenioides</i> represents a substantial range extension as does <i>Ceramium lentiforme</i> from New South Wales. One species of <i>Gibsmithia</i> also represents a significant range extension from its Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island and southern Great Barrier Reef... |

The dynamics of meiobenthic community were investigated on sandy sediments of the pilot station of Zoagli (Ligurian Sea) between January 1991 and January 1992. Meiofaunal densities ranged between 447 (April) and 3421 (July) ind./10 cm2. Nematodes were the dominant group comprising on the average 75 % of the total fauna. Harpacticoid copepods were the second most abundant group (from 1.7 to 55.3 %) followed by Turbellaria (on the average 5.5 % of total fauna) and Polychaeta (on average 1.2 % of total fauna). The importance of several environmental parameters (such as total organic matter, grain size and RPD depth) in structuring the meiobenthic community is discussed. |

Seasonal cycles of salinity, nutrients, chlorophyll and zooplankton at 8 locations on the West-European shelf were analysed with respect to their timing and magnitude in the period 1980-1984. A late spring bloom with low chlorophyll values (2-4 mg.m-³) is observed in the Irish Sea, off the Scottish east coast and the Channel entrance. An early spring bloom and relatively high chlorophyll values (7-12 mg.m-³) are found in the southern Bight and the Skagerrak, whereas a late spring bloom with high chlorophyll concentrations (24 mg.m-³) is found along the Dutch and Belgian coast. In contrast to the other regions, the peak of the phytoplankton cycle in the German Bight (Helgoland) occurs in the summer period instead of the spring period. The peak in the yearly... |
